There’s more to street lights than simply a light bulb. That may be what the general population sees, but as with most things in life, the rabbit hole goes a lot deeper. There are an increasing number of regulations and health and safety requirements, for instance, that ensure that street lighting is becoming more like a precise science all the time.
One thing we need to keep in mind is how street lights have an impact wildlife. There’s been a broad shift towards environmentalism in recent years, especially in light of growing concern about climate change. The good news is that here at Origin, we have the design skills and inclination to ensure that our street lighting design is beneficial to all living creatures, not just humans.
In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at how smart design can help wildlife.
How It Helps Wildlife
There’s no shortage of ways in which humans impact wildlife. Sometimes, this is for the better, but more often than not, the impact is detrimental. Most of these impacts are not intentional; they’re just the result of a lack of foresight. But once you know what the problem is, you can work on making things better. And that’s just what we do here. In some areas, street lighting has caused problems for birds and other wildlife. They can’t, after all, always tell the difference between sunlight and street lights, and that can disrupt their rhythm — which can cause untold problems.
By working creatively and with the wildlife impact in mind, we come up with smart solutions to lighting issues. We can assess areas that require delicate lighting, helping to minimise the impact that it has on the local wildlife.
Minimising Human Impact
Street lights can have an immediate negative impact on wildlife. But then there’s also the matter of the long-term impacts. While humans may one day feel the impacts of climate change, many species are already beginning to feel the effects. That means it’s up to us to ensure that we do everything we can to minimise the broader environmental impact of street lighting. We need to see the way, but we shouldn’t use too many natural resources. We work with ecologists and other experts to ensure that the carbon impact of our lighting is minimal.
Optimal For Residents
It would be easy to find a lighting solution that doesn’t impact wildlife; we could just turn them all off. But that’ll just shift the problem elsewhere, chiefly to human beings, who won’t be able to see. Here at Origin, we work to find a balance. Our mission is to provide the country with suitable lighting while also ensuring that the impact on wildlife is kept to a minimum. We’re always pushing forward and coming up with new solutions, which means that humans and wildlife can hope for a bright future.
